What is Imagine Cup ?

Solve the World’s Toughest Problems

“I wish there had been an Imagine Cup when I was growing up. It gets people involved in seeing that software is changing the world.”

- Bill Gates
Chairman, Microsoft Corp.

Everything that the world may become “someday” lies in the hands of young people today. As they look at the road ahead, their close relationship with technology enables them to dream in ways we never have before. Put the two together, and you have young minds holding the tools that can make their vision a reality.

This is the recipe that inspired Microsoft to create the Imagine Cup. What begins with a burst of inspiration and a lot of hard work can become a future software breakthrough, a future career, or a flourishing new industry. The Imagine Cup encourages young people to apply their imagination, their passion and their creativity to technology innovations that can make a difference in the world – today. Now in its eighth year, the Imagine Cup has grown to be a truly global competition focused on finding solutions to real world issues. Take a minute to learn more about the Imagine Cup’s 2010 theme.

Open to students around the world, the Imagine Cup is a serious challenge that draws serious talent, and the competition is intense. The contest spans a year, beginning with local, regional and online contests whose winners go on to attend the global finals held in a different location every year.  The intensity of the work brings students together, and motivates the competitors to give it their all. The bonds formed here often last well beyond the competition itself.

Together…We Can Make A Difference!

One world. Unlimited Possibilities.

Together… there has got to be a better way.

Attention software programmers, brilliant hardware developers, cutting edge designers and supreme visionaries of the world. Create a team and put your heads together to imagine a much better world. Then provide the tools through technology to make that world happen.

Technology is the strongest force to transform your brilliant ideas into real world solutions. And that’s the point of the Imagine Cup – to use technology to make a difference. Together…anything is possible.

Slash poverty and end hunger…
Protect our precious environment…
Prevent the spread of diseases…
Provide access to education for all….

No matter which team comes up with the best solutions – the world wins.

Imagine Cup 2010 Worldwide Finals: Poland

Each year the Finals are held in a different city of the world. Past Worldwide Finals include Cairo, Egypt (2009); Paris, France (2008); Seoul, South Korea (2007); Delhi, India (2006); Yokohama, Japan (2005); Sao Paulo, Brazil (2004); and Barcelona, Spain (2003). The Imagine Cup 2010 Worldwide Finals will be held in summer 2010 in Warsaw, Poland.

Step Up to the Challenge!

In 2010, once again, the Imagine Cup challenges the world’s most talented students to “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems.” You are encouraged (but are not limited) to using the United Nations Millennium Development Goals as your team’s beacon of light.  Take a minute to learn more about these eight ambitious challenges. We hope they provide you with inspiration to help you create change for the world: United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

Some competitors might use technology to find a cure for malaria. Design an entirely new way for pregnant women to access emergency medical attention.  Discover a way to counter inequalities that exist between genders around the world.  Or maybe envision and design a way to enable farmers to manage crops better and provide food faster throughout developing countries.

Yes, the solutions that together you create and submit as part of the Imagine Cup 2010 are that crucial.

IT Challenge

The object of the IT Challenge is to highlight the art and science of developing, deploying, and maintaining IT systems that are efficient, functional, robust and secure. IT professionals have a base set of tools and techniques, but still have to work through customer needs and configurations that require an intimate understanding of how the pieces fit together. They also need to know how far the systems can be pushed before they will break, and how to make the systems highly available, so that they are always available.
